The McAnespie family are saddened by the tragic news of the sudden passing of Stephen ‘Benny’ McGettigan in Boston, USA. The former Aidan McAnespie GFC player and native of Strabane, Co Tyrone passed away on 18th December 2023.
Benny was a former Strabane Sigerson’s player in the 1990s and Tyrone county player. He was then a key part of the Aidan McAnespie GFC team after emigrating to Boston in 2001. Throughout his playing career, Benny won a Boston championship medal in 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008, a North American Championship medal in 2008. He also received a personal accolade of winning a North American All-Star award in 2005.
On Benny’s final journey from Boston, USA to Strabane on 30th December 2023, Aidan’s family, friends and members of Aghaloo GFC formed a guard of honour at Aidan’s memorial where Benny’s remains stopped as a mark of respect.
